electrotherapy treatment for haemorrhoids (piles)

How does electrotherapy work?

Electrotherapy involves using a gentle electrical current to shrink the haemorrhoid(s). It is a non-surgical procedure that has been clinically researched for over 150 years. There is no cutting, stitching or heat applied and no requirement for anaesthesia.

The low electrical current stimulates a chemical reaction, which seals off the feeding blood vessels, resulting in the haemorrhoid being starved of its blood supply causing it to shrink with associated symptom reduction.

The effect continues to work to close the vessels for up to 4 weeks. Our nursing team will be in touch at this point to hear your progress.

Get treated in the comfort of your own home

No need to travel to a clinic or hospital. A nurse and chaperone will arrive at your home to deliver the treatment.

We have partnered with eXroid® to bring this life changing treatment to patients in the comfort of their own home.

How is the electrotherapy procedure carried out?

The procedure is completed by lying on your side, with your knees slightly bent. While in this position a proctoscope (a small plastic tube) is inserted into your bottom to give the nurse a clear view of the haemorrhoid(s).

A low-dose electrical current is then sent to the base of the haemorrhoid using a probe with metal contact points. This causes a chemical cauterisation and thrombosis of the veins to take place encouraging the haemorrhoid to shrink.

The current is controlled by a hand piece connected to the probe which allows our nurse to increase or decrease the current dependent on your resistance.

The treatment lasts for about 30 minutes or less depending on the number and size of haemorrhoid(s) and the current delivered.

After treatment

Haemorrhoids shrink during the procedure and can continue to shrink for up to 4 weeks after treatment – your symptoms will normally diminish. Many of our patients feel immediate relief after treatment.

Our nursing team will be in touch after this period to hear your progress.

Follow up treatment

For many patients, one treatment is all that is needed to be cleared of their haemorrhoid symptoms. Larger piles or patients with more than three haemorrhoids may require more than one treatment. The number of treatments you need is unique to each patient but can be dependent upon how many piles you have and how big they are, although even patients with larger piles have been cleared of their haemorrhoids after just one gentle treatment.

Yes, eXroid® electrotherapy is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for UK patients, and has been shown to be an effective method for treating smaller haemorrhoids. It can also be used as an alternative to surgery for treating larger haemorrhoids, but there is less evidence (at present) for its effectiveness.

No treatment for haemorrhoids is 100% safe or effective for all patients, and electrotherapy is no different —there are some risks even the most safest and effective treatment.

Rectal bleeding can be a symptom, yet this is normally temporary. Following treatment, there may be bleeding, which is possible if there has been recent bleeding from the haemorrhoids.

Some patients will experience sensitive skin on their left hip for up to 48 hours post procedure, where the saline soaked sponge pad rests during the treatment. Other side effects are very rare or have not been reported, but can include more prolonged discomfort or pain, an external thrombosed haemorrhoid, infections, scarring, strictures or perforation of the bowel.

In view of the patients who’ve shared their experiences, most patients return to normal daily activities on the same day. If there is any discomfort post treatment your nurse will advise you to take some over the counter analgesics such as paracetamol. Overall, the treatment has been proven to be complication free.
