Research Nursing for Decentralized Clinical Trials

Taking the trial to the patient through home healthcare

Specialists in Decentralized Clinical Trials

We are a global provider of home healthcare services for patients in clinical trials.

Our service offers a truly convenient way for patients to participate in clinical research by taking the trial to them.

A range of protocol and procedures can be taken in the patient’s home, from collecting blood samples to administering complex IMP via infusions.

What procedures can be carried out in the home?

Procedures which can be performed in the home include administration of study drug which may be intramuscular, via an intravenous infusion or oral etc.

IMP can be either collected by the homecare team from site pharmacies and transported to the subject or if a temperature-controlled environment is necessary a courier can be used. Any blood samples taken can be processed and spun in the home and we can ship samples on dry ice as necessary.

Our research nurses can complete ECG’s, questionnaires, undertake clinical monitoring in home. This minimises unnecessary trips to the hospital or clinic for the patients.

How does home nursing for Decentralized Clinical Trials work?

Step 1

During the consent process, patients can choose to have a home visit.

Step 2

Visit scheduled with patient. at home, school or workplace and logistics of IMP arranged.

Step 3

Research nurse visits the patient. Where possible the same nurse will complete each visit to help build a rapport.

Step 4

All visit tasks are carried out. Our research nurses carry kit with them including centrifuges. Samples are collected by the courier and taken to the laboratory. Close communication with the PI and site team maintained throughout.

Step 5

All source data is reviewed and sent to site within 24 hours of the visit. Any other health concerns are reported immediately to the site.

Our Home Research nurses

Wren Healthcare recruits experienced research nurses who have a background within clinical research covering a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas. In most cases, we are able to provide nurses with clinical experience within a sponsors indication.

In addition to this, our research nurses are ICH-GCP trained with extensive cross therapy experience. They are a vital part of the study team, approved by the hospital & trained on the study/protocol.

Our nurses are prepared for any study they are invited to support. Compliance is respected and maintained throughout and visits within the study protocol.

How does home clinical trials benefit the patient?

Our home clinical trial service has many benefits for patients:

How does home clinical trials benefit sponsors?

Home Research Nursing has great benefits for the sponsor. It can enhance recruitment rates as patients don’t have to visit sites regularly. It also enables those unable to travel or who live in remote locations to participate.

Not only does the decentralized approach to research improve retention rates but patients can build open relationships with their visiting nurse.

These factors provide extra support to the patient whilst also enabling the drug to potentially reach the marketplace more quickly.

Decentralized Clinical Trials in the EU: Accelerating the Development of New Medicines

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is working to facilitate decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) in the EU. DCTs are a type of clinical trial that uses remote monitoring and other technologies to allow patients to participate in trials from their homes or other convenient locations. This approach has the potential to make clinical trials more accessible to a wider range of patients, and to reduce the cost and time of drug development.
