This week we caught up with Ollie, our Deputy Director of Nursing here at Wren Healthcare.

Ollie joined us in September 2020 and has been busy helping grow both the clinical and education team. Ollie has vast experience in clinical home care and clinical education. He is passionate about bringing these entities together whilst also providing patient-centred care.

Ollie, tell us something we don't know about you.

From the age of five I knew that I wanted to be a nurse, my auntie managed a group of nursing homes and visiting sparked something inside of me, I just enjoyed it from a young age, chatting to the to the elder population and helping when I could. It just sowed a seed for me to want to care and support people.

Why did you choose to join Wren Healthcare?

I have previously worked with some of the senior nurses, so I knew when joining I’d be working with some fantastic people who have a real overview of homecare nursing. The professional culture spread within the company is something I felt I could really contribute to. From my experience of clinical training and working for large companies, I knew I could give the desired expertise to help grow the business.

Do you have any hobbies?

I’ve actually travelled a large part of the globe in pursuit of waves and sunshine. Surfing was a major part of my lifestyle when I was younger and this allowed me to embrace different cultures, cuisines and far flung places. This has also resulted in me making great friends for life. I still live near the sea in North Devon so manage to sneak out for a surf from time to time when the swell and winds align.

What is the coolest thing you are working on right now?

I have been working on establishing a rigorous induction programme for all of our new nurses. The nurses will receive a clinical induction and be supported from their very first day. This will allow them to establish firm foundations required, to grow and develop as professionals. Our patients/clients will be receiving nurses who understand the unique conditions which impact their daily lives. This creates empathy and compassion on disease areas which are truly specialist. This is what I’m most excited about right now, as you can tell haha.

What has been your most rewarding experience so far at Wren Healthcare?

I’ve already seen monumental growth throughout the whole of the company. I work closely with Danielle (the Director of Nursing) and I’ve been very much involved in this growth of the business. With more nurses joining, Wren is branching out into different avenues within the world of healthcare. It is a testament to all the Directors and 2021 seems like it is going to be a very positive year.

What are your passions outside of your career?

As I live in Devon I do many hobbies outdoors. My wife will probably tell me that I have too many, but I’m very much into water sports, surfing, swimming, spear fishing etc, anything to do with water and for me. I also enjoy just getting outdoors with my dog and my family and doing some hiking, walking and camping. I also have my own menswear line outside of work which is another passion of mine.

in your opinion, how does Wren Healthcare stand out from other healthcare companies you've worked for?

We all know the stresses which the nurses face out in the field, and what can impact them on a daily basis. Wren Healthcare understands that the nurses are our commodity and we treat them with care, respect and we nurture them. I try to empower them by constantly sharing the company ethos and values. Historically in some companies I’ve worked for, nurses are generally the afterthought. Some of the senior directors in this company have experienced those big corporate worlds, so we can be very different in that sense. We nurture talent.

If you could meet anyone living or dead, who would it be?

I would have loved to meet Muhammed Ali.  A visionary, athlete, philanthropist, activist and undoubtedly an entertainer.
